WHAT IS AN ORTHODONTIST?

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a Dental degree followed by a further three year specialist degree in Orthodontics.

Orthodontists don’t just fix crooked teeth, but they are also the experts in correcting misaligned jaws and bite problems. Because of their extensive knowledge of growth and development, they can provide treatment at the best time to suit each individual. Managing the teeth, within the framework of the face and the overall smile aesthetics is their speciality.

BENEFITS OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

A beautiful smile can increase overall confidence and self-esteem. Orthodontic treatment can also make it easier to clean your teeth and gums and reduce the chances of other oral problems. In some cases, (protruded teeth), orthodontic treatment can also reduce the chances of trauma and improve chewing or speech difficulties.

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t always mean you need to have teeth taken out. Often using a wide range of state of the art mechanisms, it is possible to create the smile you have always wanted without too much discomfort.

IF MY CHILD OR I NEED TREATMENT WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE?

Orthodontics has come a long way in the last few decades and we are able to provide conventional fixed orthodontic appliances(metal) as well as clear options(ceramic) and sequential clear aligners (Invisalign). In some cases, lingual braces(behind the teeth) is also available.

At the initial consultation, a specialist orthodontist will assess your need for braces and help you decide on the best option for you. Then the braces or other appliances will be fitted. Regular adjustments means that you can get the smile you want quicker and easier than ever. Once you get your braces removed, retainers will be issued so that you can keep your new teeth straight.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD FIRST SEE AN ORTHODONTIST?

Not all children will benefit from early orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases early treatment can reduce the need for complex treatment later on. It is recommeneded that all children see an orthodontist between ages 7-8 for an assessment. At this stage, we will be able to do a complete assessment and provde information on the best timing for any proposed treatment.

Below is a list of some of the common problems that would benefit from early orthodontic treatment:

  • Crossbite-of-Front-Teeth

Top teeth are behind bottom teeth
  • Crossbite-of-Back-Teeth
